Model Chronicles: Reese Antoinette

Breaking into every aspect of the fashion industry is very hard and challenging. Reese Antoinette, sits down and talks with me about the obstacles she has faced pursuing a career in modeling as a young woman of color, her favorite designers and much more. Reese is goal oriented and driven individual on the road to success, besides pursuing a career in modeling, she also attends school hoping to attain a degree in Mass Communications.

1. What steps have you taken to pursue a career in modeling?
I have been networking, networking, networking. I have been working with an agency for a couple of years and I have also been focused on meeting new and interesting photographers with new and exciting concepts. I have shot in New York, California, and Japan.

2. In the future how do you see your self building your name as a model and a brand?
I see myself building my career and brand by being as real as possible. I am extremely passionate about everything that I do and I keep that mentality with me as I go forward. I started all of this when I was 15 I have seen a lot and learned a lot so I just stay focused and keep it positive and real with everyone around me.

3. Who are some of your favorite designers?
Betsey Johnson is a must, but I also like GStar, Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen, Diane Von Furstenberg, Yizal Azrouel. Marc by Marc, Abaete and many others!

4.Have you faced any challenges or obstacles pursuing your modeling career, If so what were they?
Absolutely, the number one issue would be my height. I am 5'8 on a beautiful day, and a lot of the models booking runway and print are mostly 5'9 and taller. Also, the opportunities for women of color are growing but I have seen and dealt with that obstacle.

5. It seems like from surveys and news reports alot of young women suffer from low self esteem and body image issue, what advice would you give them ?
Surround yourself with real and positive people. In a society where what we see isn't really reality you have to stay grounded with whats real in life. I think that often times low self esteem and body image issues come from a reliance and trust in images that aren't realistic and are created for our consumption. Stay true to yourself and the people who you know you can trust. And always... follow your instincts.
