FLY FEMME Stylist -Kanayo Ebi

In this business perseverance and an dauntless sense of style is key. Kanayo Ebi is definitely on the track to accomplishing great things. As stylist for Vanessa and Angela Simmons, this St.Johns Alum is making a name for herself in the world of fashion as Stylist and Image consultant. We talk about her love for fashion, carving a niche for your self in this industry and much more. She's a sweet heart and all around fabulous!!

1. What inspired your love of fashion?
I would have to say I grew up on fashion... my parents were very much into fashion and always tried to develop our interest in it...one of my fondest memories as a child was my dad always calling me in to help put together his outfit for work and my mum taking me along with her on her shopping trips and I get to help with the final decision making. Also having had the opportunity to live in different countries and experience different cultures and how their culture helps develop their style. I also love how fashion can evolve from any and everything. The atmosphere of a city or country can inspire a collection, architecture, wildlife, plants, anything you can think of can be and has been an inspiration in fashion and that is just simply amazing to me because anyone can relate to something in it. Fashion is also a way of expressing and showing personality.

2. How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style I would say would be boho-rock-chic. I love accessories and accessorizing. I believe that it is the key in completing or revamping any outfit.

3. What is one trend you are looking forward to for fall 09'?
I'm most especially am looking forward to the hidden wedge boots for the fall, also the color scheming (neon and bold/dark colors) and the knits

4. How did you get your start in the world of fashion?
Fashion for me had always been a hobby, loved to go shopping for friends and put together outfits for them for different occassions. I graduated college with a BA in psychology, so I was not really thinking about pursuing it as a career but as God would have it alot of my friends modelled and they were always trying to get me to style their test shoots or any appearances they had to make and through that I came in contact with alot of different stylist, photographers, models and make up artist that just wanted to work with me based on my work and eye for fashion. I realized how much happier I was doing what I loved and found a stylist who was exprienced in the business to work under and also got a job working @Bergdorf goodman assisting the personal shoppers just to get more experience in the fashion world.

5. What has been your biggest struggle professionally?
Biggest struggle professionally I would say was breaking into the fashion industry. It is a struggle especially if your going at it on your own and starting from scratch. There were a lot of sacrifices that I had to make. I had to work/ intern a very long time before I could even work on a shoot and also I had to be willing to give up alot of my time, which made it difficult to hold a full time job and most of the work I was doing assisting stylists I had to do for free. Sometimes I felt discouraged and thought maybe I was wasting my time and making the wrong choice but the gratification I felt when working on a shoot, or putting together a storyboard or pulling from showrooms made me believe I made the right choice and this was indeed what I was meant to be doing, so I stuck with it and kept my mind on my dream and the bigger picture.
Also though, now with the economy in jeopardy just like every other industry, the fashion industry is taking a hit too. So many magazines are cutting back even illustrious publication companies like conde nast are feeling the pressure and cutting their budgets which mean less shoots for magazines and less work. So even lately its been a little tough but we are holding on steadfastly.

6. What advice do you have for young fashionistas trying to make a name for them selves in this industry?
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, YOUR VISION , YOUR TALENT AND STAY STRONG AND POSITIVE. It is so easy to get discouraged in this business because there are so many people out there trying to achieve the same goal as you but you just have to believe you are a rare breed and you have something more, new and different to offer. It's also a very hard industry to break into, you will find yourself having to do a lot of free work before you can even think of getting paid, you just have to persevere and humble yourself and always keep your eye on the bigger picture. Also do alot of test shoots, go on different websites like modelmayhem.com find models, photographers, make up artists looking to do test shots and you guys get together and plan shoots together....form a team so you can build up your portfolio that is very important.

We Were Once A Fairytale?

Kanye and Spike Jones, one of the most creative and amazing directors have teamed up to create a short film entitled, "We Were Once A Fairytale". All week I have heard about it and finally I have gotten a chance to actually see it for myself. I must say, it is the MOST creative and intriguing short film I have EVER seen! It evoked in me so many different emotions and portrayed a powerful story in a matter of minutes, as a short film is supposed to. Art is a beautiful thing, and the most beautiful aspect of it is that it is up to its viewers to determine what it means. It is up to you, to interpret it. Art never has one interpretation. Therefore, I just want to give you a little glimpse into what I interpret the short film meaning. Basically, I see the short film saying that Kanye and his life was once a fairytale. His fame, his "sanity", his love life, everything he ever thought or knew as a reality was once a fairytale. He's beginning to lose sight and grip of this "fairytale". This fairytale is no longer a fairytale. It is changing into something else, something else that he did not forsee. He no longer identifies with this "fairytale". This fairytale is sickening, together they are no longer happy. This "fairytale" must undisguise itself for what it truly is. They were once a fairytale, but he has to say his farewells.

Currently, I make most of the bags myself and get a few manufactured. Rocking a Red lip Correctly

So I've received a couple emails, even had conversations with numerous friends about wearing red lipstick or other colors. Some women stick to sheer glosses because they have a common misconception that color is not appropriate for women of a darker complexion. Wearing a red lip can be sultry and seductive when done correctly. It speaks volumes about the boldness of your personality, and confidence as a woman. However if done incorrectly, can have you looking like Wesley Snipes in To Wong Foo.... that is what i would like to call the EPIC FAIL.

Here is s step by step to wearing a red lip correctly.

Step 1 Exfoliate: It is imperative, think of it like building the appropriate foundation. Exfoliate your lips, peeling lips are no good, especially with a red lip. When I see young women like that, it reminds me of my grandmother who always had white specks of skin mixed in her lipstick as she attempted to kiss me.
There are certain tricks to the trade, I have learned from my mother, fellow beauty maven, over the years. Take an old toothbrush and take a small amount of sugar place it on your lips. Take the old toothbrush and gently brush your lips. After 5-10 minutes, rinse the sugar from your lip. You now have a smooth canvas to start with. If you do not want to use sugar or an old toothbrush, try Lip Strip Cooling Sugar Scrub by Laura Geller, $18.

Step 2 Primer: Like any painter knows, primer is necessary. If you do not have lip primer in your beauty arsenal, improvise. Take a small amount of foundation and blend into your Lip . Do not worry about the appearance of your lip; it is key to remember you are building a foundation. Foundation / primer acts as a filling agent. Filling in the tiny lines creating the illusion of a plumper fuller lip. If you are looking for a good primer to use try Big Mouth Primer by Philosophy

Step 3 Choosing your color: There is no perfect shade of red, more or less pick a red that complements the look you are trying to achieve to suit your personality, and complexion. There are a variety of hues to choose from; do not limit your self. Personally, I like to mix and match to create that perfect and unique signature blend of red. Then decide on a matte or glossy finish.

Step 4 Blot: Remove the excess red; don't stain those pearly whites! To finish off this look, many say put a thin layer of Vaseline over your teeth since the petroleum acts like a barrier. One trick that works for me is taking a pea size amount of toothpaste and rubbing it over my teeth. It leaves my breath feeling minty and fresh, and not thinking about red lipstick on my teeth.

Step 5 No "Bozo the Clown": A red lip is bold and vibrant to stand alone; no need to over accentuate with tons of eye shadow. Mascara and eye-liner does the trick with this look. Simplicity is key.

Model Chronicles: Reese Antoinette

Breaking into every aspect of the fashion industry is very hard and challenging. Reese Antoinette, sits down and talks with me about the obstacles she has faced pursuing a career in modeling as a young woman of color, her favorite designers and much more. Reese is goal oriented and driven individual on the road to success, besides pursuing a career in modeling, she also attends school hoping to attain a degree in Mass Communications.

1. What steps have you taken to pursue a career in modeling?
I have been networking, networking, networking. I have been working with an agency for a couple of years and I have also been focused on meeting new and interesting photographers with new and exciting concepts. I have shot in New York, California, and Japan.

2. In the future how do you see your self building your name as a model and a brand?
I see myself building my career and brand by being as real as possible. I am extremely passionate about everything that I do and I keep that mentality with me as I go forward. I started all of this when I was 15 I have seen a lot and learned a lot so I just stay focused and keep it positive and real with everyone around me.

3. Who are some of your favorite designers?
Betsey Johnson is a must, but I also like GStar, Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen, Diane Von Furstenberg, Yizal Azrouel. Marc by Marc, Abaete and many others!

4.Have you faced any challenges or obstacles pursuing your modeling career, If so what were they?
Absolutely, the number one issue would be my height. I am 5'8 on a beautiful day, and a lot of the models booking runway and print are mostly 5'9 and taller. Also, the opportunities for women of color are growing but I have seen and dealt with that obstacle.

5. It seems like from surveys and news reports alot of young women suffer from low self esteem and body image issue, what advice would you give them ?
Surround yourself with real and positive people. In a society where what we see isn't really reality you have to stay grounded with whats real in life. I think that often times low self esteem and body image issues come from a reliance and trust in images that aren't realistic and are created for our consumption. Stay true to yourself and the people who you know you can trust. And always... follow your instincts.
